Tanzania Youth Coalition

Tanzania Youth Coalition (TYC) is a national youth umbrella organisation that focuses on youth empowerment. It is the biggest youth movement in Tanzania, with 97 member youth organisations as well as hundreds of youth individuals across the nation. TYC aims to build the capacity of local youth organisations and to create political platforms from which they are able to influence and advocate for just and democratic development.

Theme: Youth For Development

Only a minority of youth wield their right to vote and contest in local and national elections in Tanzania. A contributing factor is that youth, as a consequence of the current political culture, are not provided space to legitimately claim their rights and entitlements. Moreover, patronage, unfair political recruitment and ignorance prevent many youth from entering the political realm.

MSTZAADK’s partnership with TYC aims therefore to get youth organised and empowered to play a more prominent role in politics at both district and sub-district levels. While TYC operates across Tanzania, its partnership with MSTZAADK will be based in the rural districts of Kiteto, Kisarawe, Njombe and Mbeya. Its activities involve establishing a Youth Platform in each of these districts and undertaking a comprehensive training programme for the 400 elected platform representatives, both of which it aims to have achieved by 2012.
